Vanilla Sugar
Vanilla sugar is essentially sucrose flavored with vanilla. Vanilla extract is GRAS-recognized as a flavoring; sucrose is a free sugar that should be limited per WHO guidance to less than 10 percent of daily energy (with additional benefit below 5 percent).
What it is
A blend of granulated sucrose with vanilla beans or vanilla extract, used as a flavoring sweetener.
Provides sweetness and vanilla flavor in baked goods, custards and beverages.
Why it's flagged
- added sugar contributes to weight gain, dental caries, and noncommunicable disease risk if consumed in excess
What regulators actually say
"Adults and children reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake. A further reduction to below 5% or roughly 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day would provide additional health benefits."
