Uridine
Uridine is a naturally occurring nucleoside. EFSA evaluated nucleotides (including uridine 5'-monophosphate) for use in infant formula and concluded their addition is safe at proposed levels.
What it is
A nucleoside composed of uracil and ribose; naturally present in many foods (especially organ meats, fish, and brewer's yeast).
Used in infant formula and as a nutritional supplement; precursor to RNA.
Why it's flagged
- may raise blood uric acid in susceptible individuals at high doses
What regulators actually say
"EFSA NDA Panel concluded that the proposed addition of nucleotides, including uridine 5'-monophosphate, to infant and follow-on formulae is safe."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Nucleotides including uridine GRAS for infant formula use.
European Union — EFSA
