Totally Hydrogenated Palm Fat
Fully hydrogenated oils contain very low trans fat (unlike partially hydrogenated oils, which FDA banned as not GRAS in 2018) but are very high in saturated fat. High saturated fat intake is linked by CDC and NIH to increased LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
What it is
Palm oil that has been fully hydrogenated, converting nearly all unsaturated fats to saturated fats.
Solid fat used for texture, shelf life, and structure in baked and confectionery products.
Why it's flagged
- Very high in saturated fat (>90%); excessive intake raises LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
What regulators actually say
"FDA finalized its determination that PHOs are no longer 'generally recognized as safe' (GRAS)."
"Trans fat content in foods intended for the final consumer shall not exceed 2 grams per 100 grams of fat."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Fully hydrogenated oils are permitted; partially hydrogenated oils were determined not GRAS (2018).
European Union — EFSA
Permitted; EU caps industrial trans fat at 2 g/100 g fat (Reg. 2019/649).
