Tetrabutyl Phenyl Hydroxybenzoate
Tetrabutyl phenyl hydroxybenzoate is not an approved food additive. Parabens (alkyl esters of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid) have been studied for endocrine-disrupting potential; EFSA established an ADI for some parabens but withdrew it for propyl- and butylparaben pending more data.
What it is
A phenyl hydroxybenzoate ester (paraben-related synthetic compound).
Generally a cosmetic preservative analog; not a recognized food additive.
Why it's flagged
- potential endocrine activity (paraben class)
- not approved as food additive
What regulators actually say
"EFSA was unable to establish an ADI for propyl paraben due to its effects on sex hormones and male reproductive organs."
"Parabens used in cosmetics are subject to restrictions under EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex V."
Regulatory status
