Stevioside
Stevioside is one of the principal sweet steviol glycosides in stevia leaf extract. The FDA has had no questions on numerous GRAS notices for highly purified steviol glycosides (>=95% purity) including stevioside; JECFA established an acceptable daily intake of 4 mg/kg bw/day (steviol equivalents).
What it is
A steviol glycoside (sweet diterpene glycoside) extracted from Stevia rebaudiana leaves; one of the principal sweet compounds in stevia.
High-intensity natural sweetener, providing sweetness without calories.
Why it's flagged
- possible mild digestive effects at high intakes
- purity below 95% steviol glycosides not approved by FDA
What regulators actually say
"FDA does not have questions following the review of a GRAS notification ... highly purified steviol glycosides (>=95% steviol glycosides on a dried weight basis with stevioside, rebaudioside A ... as principal components)."

United States — FDA
GRAS (no questions) for highly purified steviol glycosides including stevioside; whole-leaf and crude stevia extracts not GRAS
