Stearyl alcohol is approved by FDA for specific food uses as an emulsifier/lubricant under 21 CFR 172.864 (lauric and stearyl alcohols) and as a synthetic flavor; well-tolerated and largely non-absorbed at use levels. Predominantly used in cosmetics rather than food.
