Stearamide Amp
CIR has assessed related ethanolamides as safe when formulated to be non-irritating and not used in products where N-nitroso compounds may form. Stearamide AMP itself rates low for hazard in EWG Skin Deep and is widely used.
What it is
Amide of stearic acid and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP); a fatty amide used in cosmetics.
Cosmetic emulsifier, viscosity controller, foam booster — not a food ingredient.
Why it's flagged
- Cosmetic only
- Should not be used in formulations with nitrosating agents (theoretical N-nitrosamine concern for amides)
What regulators actually say
"The CIR Expert Panel rereviewed the safety of 28 ethanolamides and found them safe in the present practices of use and concentration when they are formulated to be nonirritating, and that these ingredients should not be used in cosmetic products in which N-nitroso compounds may be formed."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Cosmetic ingredient regulated under FD&C Act.
European Union — EFSA
Cosmetic ingredient under EU Regulation 1223/2009; not a food additive.
