Spirulina Concentrate
Also known as: spirulina extract
Spirulina extract is FDA-approved as a color additive exempt from certification (21 CFR 73.530) for use in candy, gum, frostings, and certain other foods. The main quality concern is potential contamination of wild-harvest sources with microcystin toxins or heavy metals; commercial cultivated spirulina is generally clean.
What it is
Concentrated form of Spirulina, a blue-green alga (Arthrospira platensis or A. maxima). Contains protein, phycocyanin (blue pigment), and various nutrients.
Natural blue/green colorant, protein source, nutritional supplement.
Why it's flagged
- potential contamination with microcystins or heavy metals if poorly sourced
