Sodium Selenate
Sodium selenate is permitted by FDA as a selenium source in infant formula and is recognized internationally as a fortification source. Selenium is an essential nutrient with a narrow safe range; the NIH ODS notes adverse effects at high intakes (selenosis).
What it is
An inorganic sodium salt of selenic acid, used as a source of the essential trace mineral selenium.
Selenium source for nutritional fortification; required nutrient in U.S. infant formula.
Why it's flagged
- selenium toxicity if intake exceeds UL (400 mcg/day adults)
- narrow therapeutic range
What regulators actually say
"FDA is amending its regulations to add selenium to the list of required nutrients in infant formula and to establish minimum and maximum levels."
"The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for selenium for adults is 400 mcg/day."
