Sodium Chlorite
Sodium chlorite is permitted as an antimicrobial processing aid under 21 CFR 173.325 with strict limits and conditions. It is hazardous in concentrated form and is NOT safe to ingest as a 'health' product (FDA has issued warnings against MMS/chlorine dioxide products marketed as cures).
What it is
An inorganic compound (NaClO2) that, when activated with acid, produces chlorine dioxide for antimicrobial use.
Used as a secondary direct food additive (Acidified Sodium Chlorite Solutions) for antimicrobial washes on poultry, meat, seafood, fruits, and vegetables.
Why it's flagged
- dangerous if ingested as concentrate
- FDA warns against MMS/chlorine dioxide health claims
What regulators actually say
"Acidified sodium chlorite solutions may be safely used as an antimicrobial agent... in accordance with the conditions prescribed."
"Miracle Mineral Solution... when mixed, the final product is industrial bleach... drinking these products is the same as drinking bleach. Consumers should not drink any of these products."
