Selenium
Also known as: Sn
Selenium is an essential micronutrient with an RDA of 55 µg/day for adults; it is added to foods within established safe limits. Excess intake (>400 µg/day, the UL) can cause selenosis with hair loss and nail brittleness, but at fortification levels it is safe and beneficial.
What it is
Essential trace mineral used as a nutritional fortificant, typically as sodium selenite or selenomethionine.
Nutrient fortification; cofactor for antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase).
Why it's flagged
- narrow therapeutic window at high doses
