Rice Syrup
Rice syrup is a refined caloric sweetener consisting primarily of glucose-derived sugars. Like other added sugars, excess intake is associated with increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dental caries.
What it is
A sweetener produced by enzymatically hydrolyzing cooked rice starch into shorter-chain sugars (mainly maltose, maltotriose, and glucose).
Provides sweetness, viscosity, and binding in foods; used as a sucrose alternative in many 'natural' products.
Why it's flagged
- added sugar (caloric)
- potential inorganic arsenic in rice-based syrups
What regulators actually say
"FDA established an action level of 100 parts per billion (ppb) for inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal to help minimize infants' exposure."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Standard food; FDA has set action levels for inorganic arsenic in rice cereals for infants.
European Union — EFSA
Standard food; subject to EU contaminants regulations.
