Raw Cashews
Cashews are a nutrient-dense nut providing protein, healthy monounsaturated fats, magnesium, and copper. Truly raw cashews from the shell contain urushiol (the same toxin in poison ivy) and are not safe; commercially sold 'raw' cashews are always steam-treated.
What it is
Cashew nuts (Anacardium occidentale) that have been removed from the shell but not roasted. Note: 'raw' commercial cashews are still steam-treated to remove urushiol.
A nut used as snack, in cooking, and ground into cashew butter or milk.
Why it's flagged
- tree nut allergen
- urushiol exposure if from unprocessed shell
