Rapeseed Protein
EFSA approved rapeseed protein (Brassica napus/rapa) as a novel food in 2014 for general use. It supplies essential amino acids comparable to soy; appropriate processing is required to keep glucosinolate and phytate residues low.
What it is
Protein isolate or concentrate extracted from rapeseed (canola) meal after oil pressing.
Plant protein for nutrition fortification, emulsification, and meat/dairy alternatives.
Why it's flagged
- Possible allergenicity (rare)
- Residual glucosinolates if processing inadequate
What regulators actually say
"The Panel concludes that rapeseed protein produced by the proposed process is safe under the proposed conditions of use."
"Rapeseed protein from Brassica napus L. and Brassica rapa L. is authorised to be placed on the market as a novel food."
