Psyllium Seed
Psyllium is a soluble fiber with an FDA-authorized health claim that it may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease when consumed at ≥7 g/day as part of a low-saturated-fat diet (21 CFR 101.81). Generally well-tolerated; main concerns are gas/bloating and the need to take with adequate water to avoid choking or esophageal blockage.
What it is
Seed of Plantago ovata (and related species). Both whole seed and the husk are sources of soluble fiber (mucilage).
Soluble dietary fiber and bulking agent; binds water to form a gel.
Why it's flagged
- bloating
- must be taken with water
- rare allergic reactions
