Propylene glycol mono- and diesters of fatty acids are permitted under 21 CFR as direct food additives with use-level restrictions. While generally considered safe at permitted levels, propylene glycol esters are not authorized as food additives in the EU and intake limits exist for the underlying propylene glycol.
