Potassium Salts Of Orthophosphoric Acid
Potassium phosphates are GRAS food additives. EFSA's 2019 reassessment lowered the group ADI for phosphates to 40 mg/kg bw/day (as P) due to concerns about high phosphate intakes.
What it is
Mono-, di-, and tri-potassium phosphates (E340); inorganic salts of phosphoric acid.
PH regulator, buffer, mineral source, emulsifier in cheese, leavening acid.
Why it's flagged
- Phosphate load - EFSA 2019 group ADI 40 mg/kg bw/day was lowered due to cumulative intake concerns
- Caution in chronic kidney disease - cardiovascular and kidney effects observed
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates of 40 mg/kg bw per day, expressed as phosphorus."
"Tripotassium phosphate is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice."
Regulatory status
