Polysorbate 85
Polysorbates as a class are widely used emulsifiers with established ADIs, though some animal/in vitro studies suggest possible effects on gut microbiota and intestinal barrier function. Polysorbate 85 specifically has limited food approval scope.
What it is
Polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan trioleate — a non-ionic surfactant/emulsifier formed from sorbitol, oleic acid, and ethylene oxide.
Emulsifier and stabilizer; used predominantly in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals; limited direct food use.
Why it's flagged
- emulsifier; possible effects on gut microbiota suggested by some studies
- limited direct food authorization
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group ADI of 25 mg/kg bw per day for polysorbates (E 432–E 436)."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Polysorbate 80 (21 CFR 172.840) and polysorbate 60 (21 CFR 172.836) are approved as direct food additives; polysorbate 85 is not specifically approved as a direct food additive in the US.
European Union — EFSA
Polysorbates 20, 40, 60, 65, 80 are approved as E 432–E 436 with group ADI of 25 mg/kg bw/day; polysorbate 85 is not in this approved list.
