Polypropylene
Also known as: polypropene, PP
Polypropylene is authorized as a plastic food contact material in the EU (Regulation EU 10/2011) and FDA (21 CFR 177.1520). EFSA and the FDA permit its use subject to migration limits (overall migration ≤ 60 mg/kg food).
What it is
A thermoplastic polymer (plastic) made from propylene monomers, commonly used as a packaging or food contact material rather than as an ingredient.
Food contact material / packaging (containers, lids, films); not a food ingredient.
Why it's flagged
- potential migration of additives/contaminants under heat or fatty foods
- microplastic shedding with abrasive use
What regulators actually say
"Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 provides a harmonised legal EU framework and sets out the general principles of safety and inertness for all Food Contact Materials (FCMs). Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 hosts in its Annex I a Union List of substances permitted for use in the manufacture of plastic FCMs."
"Olefin polymers may be safely used as articles or components of articles intended for use in contact with food."
