Plant Stanol Ester
Plant stanol esters are FDA-recognized as effective for LDL cholesterol reduction and qualify for an authorized health claim. They are generally well tolerated; high intake can modestly reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (e.g., beta-carotene).
What it is
Esters of plant stanols (saturated phytosterols) with fatty acids, added to spreads, yogurts, and milk to lower LDL cholesterol absorption.
Functional ingredient that competitively inhibits intestinal cholesterol absorption.
Why it's flagged
- may slightly reduce fat-soluble vitamin/carotenoid absorption
- not recommended for individuals with sitosterolemia
