Phosphate
Phosphate additives are GRAS in the U.S. and authorized in the EU, but EFSA reduced its phosphate ADI to 40 mg/kg bw/day in 2019 due to concerns about high cumulative phosphate intake from additives, especially for kidney health and cardiovascular outcomes.
What it is
Generic term for phosphate-containing food additives such as sodium, potassium, or calcium phosphates used as leavening agents, emulsifiers, and pH buffers.
Leavening, buffering, emulsifying, moisture retention, mineral fortification.
Why it's flagged
- EFSA group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day (2019); high cumulative phosphate intake from additives may exceed safe levels
- Higher intake associated with cardiovascular and renal concerns, especially in CKD
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates of 40 mg/kg bw per day, expressed as phosphorus."
"Sodium phosphate - this substance is generally recognized as safe."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Various phosphate salts GRAS (e.g., 21 CFR 182.1778, 184.1434) at GMP levels.
European Union — EFSA
Authorized as E 338-452 with a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day expressed as phosphorus (2019).
