Omega 9
Omega-9 (oleic acid) is a non-essential monounsaturated fatty acid the body can synthesize, and FDA has authorized a qualified health claim for high-oleic oils and reduced risk of coronary heart disease. Replacing saturated fat with monounsaturated fat has consistent cardiovascular benefits in observational and intervention data.
What it is
Omega-9 fatty acids, primarily oleic acid, are monounsaturated fatty acids found naturally in olive, canola, and high-oleic safflower/sunflower oils.
Source of monounsaturated fat, oxidative stability for cooking oils.
What regulators actually say
"Supportive but not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that daily consumption of about 1½ tablespoons (20 grams) of oils containing high levels of oleic acid, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Qualified health claim authorized for high-oleic oils (FDA 2018)
European Union — EFSA
Authorized health claims for replacing saturated fats with unsaturated
