Nutritional yeast is a whole-food-derived ingredient. FDA recognizes baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as GRAS under 21 CFR 184.1983.
What it is
Deactivated yeast (typically Saccharomyces cerevisiae) grown on molasses, then heated, washed, and dried. Yellow flakes or powder with a savory, cheese-like flavor.
Flavor enhancer, source of B-vitamins (often fortified with B12), complete plant protein.
