Nonpareils
Also known as: nonpareilles
Nonpareils are sugar-based decorations whose composition depends on the colors used. While often harmless in small amounts, certain formulations may contain artificial dyes (e.g., FD&C Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6), which have been linked to behavioral effects in some children, and historically titanium dioxide (banned in the EU in 2022).
What it is
Tiny sugar-based decorative confections (sprinkles), typically composed of sugar, starch, and added colorings.
Decoration on cakes, cookies, and confections.
Why it's flagged
- Added sugars
- Possible artificial dyes
- Possible TiO2 in older/imported formulations
What regulators actually say
"FDA-certified color additives include FD&C Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, and Yellow No. 6, used in confectionery and decorations."

Regulatory status
