Natural Smoke Flavouring
Also known as: natural smoked flavouring
Natural smoke flavoring is FDA GRAS. EFSA conducted detailed safety assessments of individual smoke flavoring primary products (SFPPs); in 2024, EFSA could not exclude genotoxic risk for several authorized smoke flavor primary products and recommended their authorization not be renewed.
What it is
Flavoring derived from condensing wood smoke (hardwood pyrolysis), then purifying to remove tar and most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
Smoky flavor; partial preservative effect.
Why it's flagged
- Residual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- EFSA 2024 could not exclude genotoxicity for several smoke flavor primary products
- EU declined to renew authorization for 8 SFPPs in 2024
What regulators actually say
"EFSA's experts could not rule out safety concerns linked to genotoxicity for any of the eight smoke flavouring primary products under assessment."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
GRAS under 21 CFR 182.50; FEMA GRAS for natural smoke flavorings
