Natural Casing
Natural casings are an edible animal-tissue product, USDA-regulated for hygiene and free of additives. Concerns are limited to animal-source allergens, religious dietary restrictions, and the presence of these in cured/processed meats which are independently classified by IARC as Group 1 carcinogens.
What it is
Sausage casing made from cleaned animal intestines (typically sheep, hog, or beef).
Edible container for ground meat in sausages; provides characteristic 'snap' texture.
Why it's flagged
- animal-source product (allergen/dietary)
- use in processed meats classified Group 1 by IARC
What regulators actually say
"The consumption of processed meat was classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) on the basis of sufficient evidence in humans that the consumption of processed meat causes colorectal cancer."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
USDA-FSIS regulated; permitted in meat products under 9 CFR.
European Union — EFSA
Permitted as animal byproduct under EU food hygiene regulations.
