Mussels are a nutritious shellfish (high protein, omega-3s, iron, B12) but are a major mollusk allergen requiring labeling under FALCPA. As filter feeders they can accumulate biotoxins (PSP, DSP) and microbial contaminants if harvested from unsafe waters.
