Mechanically Separated Meat
USDA FSIS regulates MSM with strict bone-content and labeling requirements. Mechanically separated beef (MSB) was banned in 2004 due to BSE risk; mechanically separated pork and poultry are still permitted with limits.
What it is
Mechanically separated meat (MSM): a paste-like meat product obtained by forcing bones with attached edible meat under high pressure through a sieve.
Low-cost meat ingredient in processed meats.
