Magnesium
Magnesium is an essential mineral required for muscle function, nerve transmission, blood pressure regulation, and bone health. Dietary intake is generally safe; supplemental magnesium has a tolerable upper intake level (350 mg/day from supplements) due to GI laxative effects above that.
What it is
Essential dietary mineral; in foods often added as fortificant (e.g., magnesium oxide, citrate, sulfate).
Nutrient fortificant; cofactor for hundreds of enzymatic reactions.
Why it's flagged
- GI/laxative effects at high supplemental doses
What regulators actually say
"Magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis."
"EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies sets dietary reference values for magnesium."
