Magnesium Glycinate
Magnesium glycinate is generally well tolerated and considered a bioavailable form of magnesium. NIH ODS sets the UL for supplemental magnesium at 350 mg/day for adults to avoid osmotic diarrhea.
What it is
Chelate of magnesium with two glycine molecules (magnesium bisglycinate); sold as a highly bioavailable magnesium supplement.
Magnesium fortificant / supplement.
Why it's flagged
- osmotic diarrhea above UL (350 mg supplement/day)
- renal-failure patients risk hypermagnesemia
What regulators actually say
"The UL for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg/day for adults; intakes above this can cause diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping."
"Magnesium bisglycinate is added to the list of authorised magnesium sources under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Permitted as nutrient/supplement under DSHEA; bisglycinate listed in food and supplement labeling.
