Isomaltulose
Isomaltulose is fully digested but more slowly than sucrose, producing a lower glycemic and insulinemic response. It is GRAS-affirmed in the U.S.
What it is
A naturally occurring disaccharide (Palatinose) consisting of glucose and fructose linked by an alpha-1,6 bond, derived enzymatically from sucrose.
Slowly digestible sugar used as a low-glycemic sweetener in beverages, sports nutrition, and confectionery.
Why it's flagged
- Same caloric value as sucrose; not a low-calorie sweetener
What regulators actually say
"FDA has no questions regarding the conclusion that isomaltulose is GRAS for use as an ingredient in foods"
"Consumption of foods containing isomaltulose instead of sucrose induces a lower blood glucose rise after their consumption"
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
GRN 184 - GRAS no objection 2006
