Isomalto-Oligosaccharide
Also known as: isomaltooligosaccharide
IMO has GRAS notices on file with FDA. However, FDA in 2018–2019 declined to include IMO on its list of dietary fibers because evidence did not demonstrate sufficient physiological benefit; IMO is partially digested in the small intestine, producing glucose and a glycemic response similar to other digestible carbohydrates.
What it is
IMO — a mixture of α-(1→6)-linked glucose oligomers with degree of polymerization 2–10; produced enzymatically from starch.
Sweetener and added carbohydrate marketed as low-glycemic 'fiber' alternative.
Why it's flagged
- May cause GI symptoms (gas, bloating, diarrhea) at higher doses
- Partially digested; produces a glycemic response similar to other digestible carbs
What regulators actually say
"Isomalto-oligosaccharides... were found to be fully digestible and elicited a glycemic response similar to that of glucose, indicating they should not be classified as a dietary fiber."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
GRAS via several notices; FDA declined dietary fiber listing (2019).
European Union — EFSA
Permitted as a food ingredient; not authorized as a dietary fiber claim.
