Hydrogenated Vegetable Glyceride
Also known as: HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE GLYCERIDES
Fully hydrogenated vegetable glycerides are permitted; FDA GRAS as mono- and diglycerides under 21 CFR 184.1505. Critically, FDA's 2018 determination revoked GRAS for partially hydrogenated oils (PHO) due to trans-fat-related coronary heart disease risk.
What it is
Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids derived from vegetable oil that have been catalytically hydrogenated to saturate the fatty-acid chains.
Emulsifier and texture agent. "Hydrogenated" (fully hydrogenated) is distinct from "partially hydrogenated" – fully hydrogenated material contains negligible trans fat.
Why it's flagged
- High in saturated fat
What regulators actually say
"FDA made a final determination that there is no longer a consensus among qualified experts that PHOs... are GRAS for any use in human food."
