Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate
Hydrogenated starch hydrolysates (HSH) and the related polyol maltitol are GRAS/approved food additives. EFSA notes polyols generally have a laxative effect at intakes above ~20 g/day, requiring 'excessive consumption may produce laxative effects' labeling in the EU when above thresholds.
What it is
A mixture of polyols (sugar alcohols) — including maltitol, sorbitol, and longer hydrogenated oligosaccharides — produced by partial hydrolysis and hydrogenation of starch.
Sugar replacer providing sweetness, bulk, humectancy, and reduced caloric value.
Why it's flagged
- laxative/GI effects at high intake (>20 g/day)
What regulators actually say
"A cause and effect relationship has been established between the consumption of foods/drinks containing polyols instead of sugar and the maintenance of tooth mineralisation."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
GRAS for use as a polyol sweetener; FDA permitted use in foods
European Union — EFSA
Approved polyol; warning required for excess consumption
