Hydrogenated Rapeseed Oil
Fully hydrogenated oils contain minimal trans fat (unlike partially hydrogenated) but are highly saturated; AHA recommends limiting saturated fat. FDA distinguishes fully hydrogenated as GRAS while partially hydrogenated oils are no longer GRAS.
What it is
Rapeseed (canola) oil that has been fully hydrogenated to saturate its fatty acids, increasing solidity and oxidative stability.
Solid fat for shortening, confectionery, and processed foods; replacement for partially hydrogenated oils.
Why it's flagged
- Very high saturated fat; excessive intake raises LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk per AHA guidance
What regulators actually say
"FDA's determination applies to PHOs and not to fully hydrogenated oils, which remain GRAS for use in food."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Fully hydrogenated oils remain GRAS; partially hydrogenated oils are no longer GRAS (FDA 2015 determination)
European Union — EFSA
Permitted; trans fat limit 2 g per 100 g of fat per Regulation 2019/649
