Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil
Also known as: hydrogenated palm kernel
Fully hydrogenated palm kernel oil is high in saturated fat (notably lauric and myristic acids) but, unlike partially hydrogenated oils, contains negligible trans fat. High intake of saturated fat is associated with elevated LDL cholesterol and increased risk of cardiovascular disease per FDA and Dietary Guidelines.
What it is
Palm kernel oil that has been fully hydrogenated to saturate the fatty acids and produce a hard, stable fat.
Solid fat for confections, fillings, coatings, and non-dairy creamers; provides texture and shelf stability.
Why it's flagged
- Very high in saturated fat (lauric, myristic); chronic high intake associated with elevated LDL cholesterol
What regulators actually say
"Replacing foods high in saturated fat with healthier options can lower blood cholesterol levels and improve lipid profiles."
"Limit saturated fat to less than 10 percent of calories per day starting at age 2."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Permitted as a food ingredient; not subject to the PHO ban because it is fully (not partially) hydrogenated.
European Union — EFSA
Permitted; saturated fat intake addressed through Dietary Reference Values.
