Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil
Fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil is distinguished from partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), which the FDA banned in 2018 because they are no longer GRAS. Fully hydrogenated oil contains negligible trans fats but is high in saturated fat.
What it is
Cottonseed oil chemically hydrogenated to add hydrogen to unsaturated fatty acids, increasing saturation and solidity.
Solid fat for texture, shelf stability; replaces partially hydrogenated oils.
Why it's flagged
- high saturated fat
- ambiguity with partially hydrogenated oils which are banned
What regulators actually say
"FDA's final determination that there is no longer a consensus among qualified experts that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), which are the primary dietary source of industrially produced trans fatty acids, are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for any use in human food."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Fully hydrogenated permitted; partially hydrogenated banned since 2018
European Union — EFSA
Fully hydrogenated permitted; trans fats restricted to 2g/100g of fat (since 2021)
