Hydrogenated Coconut Oil
Also known as: fully hydrogenated coconut oil
Fully hydrogenated coconut oil is essentially all saturated fat with negligible trans fat (unlike partially hydrogenated oils, which are banned). High intakes of saturated fat raise LDL cholesterol; FDA Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting saturated fat to less than 10% of calories.
What it is
Coconut oil that has been fully hydrogenated, eliminating remaining unsaturated bonds and producing a high-melting saturated fat.
Solid fat used for texture, mouthfeel, and shelf-stability in confectionery, coatings, and bakery products.
Why it's flagged
- Very high saturated fat content
What regulators actually say
"FDA's final determination applies only to partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs). Fully hydrogenated oils are not affected by this action."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Hydrogenated (fully) vegetable oils remain GRAS for use in food, distinct from PHOs which were revoked.
European Union — EFSA
Authorized; subject to EU 2 g/100 g industrial trans-fat limit (Reg. 2019/649) — fully hydrogenated oils are below this limit.
