Homosalate
Also known as: Homomenthyl salicylate
Homosalate is FDA-permitted in sunscreens at up to 15%, but in 2021 the FDA proposed it lacks sufficient data to be classified as generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE), pending further study. EU regulators reduced its allowed concentration to 7.34% in 2022 over concerns it may act as an endocrine disruptor.
What it is
An organic chemical UV filter (a salicylate ester) used in sunscreens to absorb UVB radiation.
Not a food ingredient; functions as a sunscreen active that absorbs UVB to protect skin from sunburn.
Why it's flagged
- Endocrine disruption signal: EU SCCS concluded homosalate's safety margin is insufficient at higher concentrations due to potential endocrine activity.
- Systemic absorption: FDA studies show it is absorbed through skin at levels above the toxicology threshold for safety review.
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Permitted sunscreen active (up to 15%); GRASE status under review
European Union — EFSA
Not applicable; EU SCCS limits cosmetic use to 7.34%
