Hemp Seed Protein
Hulled hemp seed and hemp seed protein from industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) are recognized as GRAS in the U.S. (FDA accepted GRAS Notices GRN 738, 741, 765 for hulled hemp seed, hemp seed protein, and hemp seed oil).
What it is
Protein-rich powder produced from hulled hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa L., low-THC industrial hemp) by mechanical pressing/dehulling and removal of fat and fiber, leaving a concentrated plant protein (typically 50–70% protein by weight). Predominantly edestin and albumin globulins.
Plant-based protein fortification ingredient; provides protein, modest amino-acid balance, and small amounts of fiber and minerals. Used to boost protein content in plant-based formulations.
Why it's flagged
- may contain trace cannabinoids — generally far below intoxicating levels but a consideration for sensitive workplace drug testing
- rare hemp-seed allergy reports
