Grass-Fed Beef
Grass-fed beef is a whole-food protein source. As with all red and processed meat, the IARC has classified processed meat as Group 1 carcinogenic and red meat as Group 2A 'probably carcinogenic'; this applies to the meat itself rather than to grass-fed sourcing specifically.
What it is
Beef from cattle whose lifetime diet is forage (grass, hay) rather than grain finishing.
Protein source; contains slightly higher proportion of omega-3s and conjugated linoleic acid versus grain-fed beef.
Why it's flagged
- red meat - IARC Group 2A
- saturated fat
What regulators actually say
"Red meat was classified as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A)."
