Glucose-Fructose Syrup
Also known as: fructose-glucose syrup, glucose and fructose syrup
Glucose-fructose syrup is a free sugar metabolically comparable to sucrose. Excess intake of free sugars including HFCS is linked to obesity, dental caries, and metabolic dysregulation; WHO recommends limiting free sugars to under 10% of energy intake.
What it is
Liquid sweetener made from enzymatic hydrolysis of starch (typically corn or wheat) followed by partial isomerization of glucose to fructose; equivalent to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the US.
Sweetener, humectant, and bulking agent.
Why it's flagged
- free sugar; excess intake linked to obesity, T2D risk, dental caries
What regulators actually say
"High fructose corn syrup is the liquid food obtained from a partial enzymatic conversion of glucose (dextrose) to fructose..."
"WHO recommends a reduced intake of free sugars throughout the lifecourse... to less than 10% of total energy intake."
