Fucus Vesiculosus
Fucus vesiculosus is iodine-dense and can contain extremely variable iodine and arsenic content. NIH ODS and Health Canada warn that brown-seaweed supplements can deliver iodine doses that disrupt thyroid function.
What it is
Bladderwrack, a brown seaweed (Fucus vesiculosus) used as a food, supplement, and cosmetic ingredient.

Why it's flagged
- Variable high iodine content (thyroid dysfunction)
- Inorganic arsenic accumulation
- Anticoagulant interactions
What regulators actually say
"Some kelp- and seaweed-based supplements contain high amounts of iodine that can vary from product to product or even between lots, and consumption can lead to iodine excess and thyroid dysfunction."
