Fructooligosaccharide
Also known as: fructo-oligosaccharide, Fructooligosaccharid
Fructooligosaccharides are nondigestible carbohydrates that act as prebiotics, fermented by colonic bacteria. They are well-tolerated, but high doses can cause gas, bloating, and laxative effects, and people with IBS or fructose malabsorption may be sensitive.
What it is
Short-chain fructose oligomers (FOS), naturally found in many plants and produced industrially from sucrose or chicory inulin.
Soluble fiber, prebiotic, low-calorie sweetener and bulking agent.
Why it's flagged
- GI effects (gas, bloating) at high doses
- Issues for FODMAP-sensitive individuals
