Ferrous Fumarate
Ferrous fumarate is an FDA-affirmed GRAS iron source widely used to fortify foods and treat iron deficiency. At normal fortification levels it is safe, though excessive iron intake can cause GI upset, and accidental overdose of iron supplements is dangerous to children.
What it is
Ferrous fumarate is the iron(II) salt of fumaric acid, used as an iron source in dietary supplements and fortified foods.
Iron fortificant and nutrient supplement; provides bioavailable iron.
Why it's flagged
- GI side effects (constipation, nausea) at high doses
- iron overdose risk in children
