Eupatorium Rebaudianum Leaf Extract
Stevia leaf extracts containing high-purity steviol glycosides (E 960) are recognized as safe by EFSA and FDA at established intake levels. EFSA established an ADI of 4 mg/kg bw/day expressed as steviol equivalents.
What it is
An extract from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana (historical synonym Eupatorium rebaudianum), source of steviol glycoside sweeteners.
Natural high-intensity sweetener; provides sweetness with negligible calories.
Why it's flagged
- Crude/whole-leaf extracts not GRAS in the U.S. (only purified steviol glycosides are)
What regulators actually say
"FDA has not permitted the use of whole-leaf Stevia or crude Stevia extracts in food because these substances have not been approved for use as a food additive. FDA also has not responded with questions to GRAS notices for high-purity steviol glycosides."
"The Panel established an ADI for steviol glycosides, expressed as steviol equivalents, of 4 mg/kg bw/day."
