Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil is GRAS in the US as a flavoring at low food-grade levels (21 CFR 182.20). However, undiluted or large oral doses can be toxic, particularly to children, causing CNS depression, seizures, and respiratory distress.
What it is
A volatile essential oil distilled from leaves of Eucalyptus species, primarily containing 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol).
Flavoring agent in small quantities in confectionery, cough drops, and beverages.
Why it's flagged
- Toxic if ingested in larger-than-flavoring amounts; CNS depression and seizure risk, especially in children
What regulators actually say

"Eucalyptus oil is likely unsafe when taken by mouth without first being diluted. Taking 3.5 mL (less than a teaspoon) of undiluted oil can be fatal."
