Maltitol
Also known as: E965
Maltitol is approved by FDA and EFSA with an ADI 'not specified' (highest safety category). However, it is incompletely absorbed and fermented in the gut, causing gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea at moderate doses.
What it is
Maltitol (E965), a sugar alcohol (polyol) made by hydrogenating maltose.
Sugar substitute; provides sweetness with reduced calories and lower glycemic impact.
Why it's flagged
- Laxative and gastrointestinal effects (bloating, diarrhea) at moderate doses; EU requires excess-consumption warning when polyols exceed 10%
What regulators actually say
"Foods containing more than 10% added polyols must bear an additional label statement: 'excessive consumption may produce laxative effects.'"
