Neotame
Also known as: E961
Neotame is approved by both FDA (2002) and EFSA (2010) as a sweetener, with established acceptable daily intakes (FDA: 0.3 mg/kg bw/day; EFSA: 2 mg/kg bw/day). Unlike aspartame, neotame's structure prevents significant phenylalanine release, so PKU labeling is not required.
What it is
Neotame (E961) is a high-intensity artificial sweetener structurally similar to aspartame; ~7,000-13,000x sweeter than sucrose.
Non-nutritive sweetener.
