Steviol Glycosides
Also known as: E960, Steviol glycoside, stevia rebaudiana extract, stevia leaf extract, steviol
Steviol glycosides are FDA GRAS and EFSA-authorized with an ADI of 4 mg/kg bw/day expressed as steviol equivalents. Studies have not shown carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, or developmental effects at the established ADI.
What it is
Sweet glycoside compounds (rebaudioside A, stevioside, etc.) extracted from leaves of Stevia rebaudiana, 200-300x sweeter than sucrose.
High-intensity, zero-calorie natural sweetener used in beverages, dairy, and tabletop sweeteners.
Why it's flagged
- rare bitter aftertaste at high doses
- intake exceeding ADI possible in heavy diet-soda consumers
What regulators actually say
"Certain high-purity stevia derived sweeteners may be used as general purpose sweeteners as the subject of GRAS notices."
"The Panel concluded that there is insufficient justification to increase the current ADI of 4 mg/kg bw per day, expressed as steviol equivalents."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
GRAS for high-purity steviol glycosides (≥95%) via multiple GRAS notices.
European Union — EFSA
Authorized as E960; ADI 4 mg/kg bw/day as steviol equivalents (EFSA 2010, reaffirmed 2024).
